  1. How do I search the BIG register?

    You can search the register in various ways.

    • Click on Search at the top of the Home page. This allows you to search by name and specialist field, BIG registration number, or by the name of the person you want to look up, combined with their address or date of birth.

    • We register healthcare professionals according to the address where they live. However, private information about addresses and dates of birth is not normally made known to the public. For this reason, you can also consult the BIG register by telephone or email. The information helpline number is 0900 – 8998225 (€0.10 per minute). The email address is info@bigregister.nl. Our staff will help you find what you want to know.

  2. What information does the BIG register supply?

    The register shows which profession is practised by a particular individual. It also indicates whether they have a specialised field of expertise. If a disciplinary measure has been imposed, the register indicates how long for.

  3. Why is it useful to check the BIG Register?

    If you have a particular healthcare professional in mind, it is important to know whether they are licensed to practise. You can find out by checking the register. If you are being treated by a specialist, you can find out from the register whether they are bona fide. For instance, you can see whether a person who offers plastic surgery is indeed a registered plastic surgeon.

  4. What should I do if I have a complaint about a healthcare professional?

    There are various options open to you.

    • First, you can complain directly to the person concerned or to their employer. All organisations in the healthcare sector have complaints procedures. However, these are not covered by the Healthcare Professionals Act.

    • Alternatively, you can go to the independent organisation Zorgbelang Nederland for advice and support. They will help you with your complaint. Contact them on 0900 – 243 7070. For more information, go to their website: www.zorgbelang-nederland.nl.

    • You can also address your complaint to a disciplinary body. The website www.tuchtcollege-gezondheidszorg.nl lists the addresses of regional healthcare disciplinary boards in this country. Disciplinary rules are there to protect health care in the Netherlands: patients cannot apply for compensation from the disciplinary board.

  5. I want to get a doctor’s certificate legalised. How do I do this?

    If you have a doctor's certificate, for instance for essential medicines to take on holiday abroad, you may need to have it legalised. When a Dutch document is legalised, foreign authorities can see that it is valid. For declarations about medicines, please contact Farmatec.

    Other kinds of doctor's declarations, such as medical reports, health certificates, and reports accompanying visa applications can be legalised through the BIG register. Our signature indicates that the doctor in question is a registered professional and therefore competent to issue the declaration. BIG-legalised declarations are accepted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  6. What are the opening times of the BIG register?

    The BIG register is open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 17.00. Please note: the Legalisation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is only open from 9.30 to 12.30 on these days.
