The decision may allow you to work in the profession for which you submitted your application, but not (yet) entirely independently. You must first spend a period working under supervision.
The purpose of supervision The purpose of requiring you to work under supervision is to ensure that you become fully familiar with various aspects of the Dutch healthcare system. Extra professional training is not considered necessary: ‘on the job’ coaching by an experienced supervisor is enough. The supervisor must be a healthcare provider who is entitled to practise his or her profession fully independently in the Netherlands. The exact requirements for the supervisor are given in the Circular section, together with information on how you can arrange supervision.
If your qualifications and training are considered ‘Equivalent’ or ‘Largely equivalent’ will you be permitted to work under supervision. If the decision is ‘Not equivalent’ you will always be required to undertake further training before you may practise your profession independently in the Netherlands.
Equivalent professional competence If your qualifications and training are deemed ‘Equivalent’, this means that your knowledge and skills are indeed at the required level, but you have not yet practised your profession independently in the Netherlands. Here, the purpose of supervision is to ensure that you become thoroughly familiar with the Dutch healthcare system, and to allow you to demonstrate your ability to practise with due regard for professional standards. In particular, attention will be devoted to:
Relevant legislation Medical ethics Interpersonal communication with patients and colleagues The Dutch language The structure of the Dutch healthcare system
Largely equivalent professional competence If your qualifications and training are deemed to be ‘Largely equivalent’, working under supervision will enable you to raise your level of professional competence to the required level. The decision will state the exact supervision requirements.
This type of supervision is imposed chiefly with a view to education and training. The supervisor must be linked to, or in regular contact with, an approved institute of higher education. At the end of the supervision period, he or she will then be able to ascertain whether you have attained the required level.
