The member states of the European Union have made reciprocal agreements regarding the recognition of professional diplomas in the healthcare professions.
Approved’ diplomas awarded in the EU The member states of the European Union have made reciprocal agreements regarding the recognition of professional diplomas in the healthcare professions. These agreements apply to all countries listed in the column on the right of this page. The agreements are established by means of ‘sectoral directives’ covering five specific professions: pharmacist, doctor, dentist, midwife and (general) nurse. Diplomas covered by the directives are listed in the section headed Recognition of foreign healthcare diplomas’. These are the so-called ‘approved’ diplomas.
If you hold the nationality of one of the countries on the list and are in possession of a diploma which appears on the list of automatically approved credentials, you can apply for immediate inclusion in the BIG-register.
If you do not hold the nationality of one of the listed countries, you must first apply for a ‘Declaration of Professional Competence’. The Help section of this site will help you determine whether you are eligible for immediate registration.
Other professional diplomas awarded in the EU Immediate registration is not available for the professions of healthcare pyschologist, physiotherapist and psychotherapist. If you wish to register as a practitioner of one of these professions, you must first obtain a Declaration of Professional Competence.
