For three professions re-registration in the BIG-register has been introduced: nurses, midwives and physiotherapists. This means that the registration is always valid for a period of five years as from 1 January 2009. If you meet the criteria for re-registration after five years, you can renew the registration. The first time that the registration actually has to be renewed is on 1 January 2014.
What does registration in the BIG register mean? Only care providers who are registered in the BIG register may bear the professional title. In practice registration means that you are allowed to practise the profession in the Netherlands.
What does re-registration mean? With the introduction of re-registration the registration is always valid for a period of five years. When a person meets the criteria for re-registration, the registration can be renewed again for five years. On 1 January 2009 the first period of five years started. Before 1 January 2014 you have to prove that you meet the criteria for re-registration. If you do not meet these criteria, your registration will be deleted. This means that you cannot practise your profession anymore independently in the Netherlands.
What are the criteria? There are two separate criteria: the work experience requirement or the education requirement. You can renew your registration when you meet one of these criteria.
Work experience requierement The easiest way to renew the registration is by working. You must have worked at least 2080 hours over a period of five years in the profession for which you have been registered. You may include work experience abroad.
Education requirement What if you don’t work or can’t meet the requirement of 2080 hours? In that case you will qualify for re-registration if you meet the education requirement. You must then follow the education programme. This will take place in the Netherlands. Education followed abroad does not count for re-registration. The education programme starts with a test, the entrance test. You must do this entrance test in the Netherlands. The result of this test determines whether you can re-register or that you will still have to follow education.
Do you want to continue your registration in the BIG register after 2014? This is possible. Also when you do not work in the Netherlands. You must then meet one criterion for re-registration. In practice this will usually mean that you meet the work experience requirement. After all, for the education requirement you will have to go to the Netherlands.
On www.bigregister.nl/registratie/herregistratie you can read what you will have to do in the next five years and how you can renew your registration. This information is only available in Dutch. In order to work in the Netherlands in the care sector, you must have mastered the Dutch language.
When you renew your registration What if you are not a citizen of one of the EEA-countries? Then you will need a residence permit. You may also need a work permit for non-EU nationals. So a renewal of your registration does not automatically mean that you are allowed to work in the Netherlands. For more information see with a foreign diploma/working in the netherlands
What will happen if you do not meet the criteria for reregistration? Your registration will terminate as of 1 January 2014. Then you will not be allowed to bear the professional title anymore in the Netherlands.
What if you will not work anymore in the Netherlands in the future in the profession for which you are registered? Then you can continue your registration without a problem until 1 January 2014. But you can also decide to terminate your registration now. You can request the BIG-register in writing to terminate your registration. The address is:
BIG-register Postbus 16114 2500 BC The Hague The Netherlands
The BIG-register will send you a confirmation of the deletion of your registration.
