Rights and responsibilities

As a healthcare provider, you are not automatically included in the BIG-register upon graduation, but must request registration. Inclusion in the BIG-register entails certain rights and responsibilities which you must explicitly accept.

Use of professional title

The use of a professional title is legally protected. You are only entitled to use a title once your name is included in the BIG-register. Many employers and health insurers will demand that you are registered. Registration enables you to demonstrate your ability and expertise as a professional healthcare provider.

Reserved procedures

The BIG Act lists a number of ‘reserved procedures’. These are medical interventions which would represent an unacceptable risk to patient safety if carried out by an unqualified, non-expert person. They include injections, punctures (epidurals), catheterization and the administration of general anaesthetics.
Only a small number of healthcare providers are authorized under the BIG Act to carry out such interventions autonomously. A brochure in Dutch (Onder Voorbehoud) is available, explaining how expertise is assessed and setting out the restrictions imposed by the BIG Act. You can also obtain further information from the relevant Professional associations.
The following healthcare providers are permitted to carry out (some of) the reserved procedures: doctors, dentists, midwives and nurses.
