Eight specific healthcare professions have a central official register, known as the BIG-register: Dentists, doctors, health care psychologists, midwives, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and psychotherapists Once you have obtained the relevant diploma, you can be included in the BIG-register. You are then able to use the legally protected professional title.
Doing so when not registered is an offence punishable in law. Note that there is no 'provisional' registration: you must be able to produce your diploma. In practice, the vast majority of employers will demand that you are registered, and health insurers often include registration as a condition of their contracts with healthcare providers. Registration is also required if you wish to train in one of the legally recognized specialisms. The above applies to legally recognized specialisms.
